Last week, I was coaching a class and during the workout, everyone had to do burpees. If you don't know what a burpee is, let me explain. To start a burpee, you lower yourself down into a squat with your hands on the floor in front of you. Push your legs behind you so your body is in a plank and then lower down into a push-up and come back up. Bring your feet forward into a squat by your hands, then rise, jumping up and clapping your hands overhead. That's a burpee.
Now, how are burpees a metaphor for life? Just like I told my clients, when you get down, get right back up. Life gets busy and complicated but it's our ability to work past the hard parts that shows how strong we truly are. We can't give up and run away from our problems. We have to face them head on so that we can overcome them. I've had a number of challenges in my life but instead of hiding from them like I wanted to, I sucked it up and tackled each challenge as well as I could. Those experiences made me stronger mentally, emotionally, and sometimes, physically.
This applies to exercise, too. Just because you stopped exercising for a while or never even started doesn't mean it isn't worth it to get back to it or begin. You owe it to yourself to get healthy and give yourself the best chance for a long life. If you decide to hide from exercising because you're worried about judgment from others, think you're unable to do the movements correctly, or hate sweating (you know who you are!), you're letting these fears rule your life. It's time to get back off of the floor of life and show yourself what you're made of!
