WHO AM I?
Hi! I'm Jen Harris and I'm so happy you stopped by to start making some positive changes in your life, whether it be reading some articles or getting a fitness program.
My fitness journey began during my senior year of college when I started running at the encouragement of my roommate. I had gained 10 lbs from eating unhealthy foods and drinking way too many beers, and needed to get fit. I ran a few races, including a half marathon, over the span of 4 years but eventually grew bored of the treadmill and the same routes outside. I tried a CrossFit class in October 2012 and immediately fell in love. I received my CrossFit Level 1 trainer certificate in January of 2014. I wanted to learn more and decided to get my Master's in Sports and Health Sciences, which I completed in July 2015. I also became a certified personal trainer through NSCA in December 2014.
In January 2014, I found out that I have an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which causes hypothyroidism. I have learned a great deal about autoimmune diseases, how diet can play a big role in the treatment of those diseases, and how exercise can alleviate symptoms.
WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL FITNESS?
While my biggest exercise love is CrossFit, I know it is not for everyone due to intensity, cost, or the types of exercises. And that's ok! My goal is help get you into the best shape of your life using functional movements that translate over into movements you do on a daily basis, such as learning how to squat properly so you can sit down in a chair without straining your muscles or hurting your knees.
When we perform functional movements, like squats or shoulder presses, we increase our joints' range of motion and ability to react properly and with good form when we need to sit down quickly or lift a heavy box overhead. By working on those movements instead of isolated exercises, like bicep curls, we improve our ability to be human in the most natural sense, doing movements we were meant to do.
